The need to be thrifty

There is a compelling need to save, especially when the economy is in a tumultuous state. I realise that the older generation is more adept at saving the scraps whereas the younger generation tend to be more generous with their loose change.

My aunt, her friend and I were clearing the storeroom today and loads were thrown away. They tried to keep whatever that was still usable while my first thought was to throw. Our values were intrinsically different.

..

My mum was a thrifty woman, and she worked hard to put us through university. She saved wherever she could and spent wisely. Looking back, I knew I could have done better for my previous semesters when my mum was still around; and it only struck me how disappointing I was after my mum's death. That realisation struck me like a bolt from the blue. However, this time round, I can say that my mum would be proud of my results. =) heh heh.

..

Perhaps I need to learn to be thrifty like my mum. Thriftiness is a virtue. After all, it is hard to save and all too easy to spend your money away. I need to constantly remind myself the importance of saving, though not to the extent of being stingy.
